Best Beaches near Charleston

Birds aren’t the only ones who fly south for winter! Travel buffs know that the winter months are one of the most affordable times to visit the Lowcountry. If you are looking to get away from the cold with a sunny, seaside escape, we know just the place.

While Seabrook Island is one of the most serene beach destinations in the summertime, we have a special place in our hearts for the off-season on the island. So pack your bags and start planning your warm-weather escape at one of our Seabrook Island rentals with these ideas from your resident islanders!

A Local’s Guide to Planning Your Winter Vacation on Seabrook Island

Take Advantage of the Island’s Tranquility

Because Seabrook Island is a four-season destination, there’s no clear consensus on when the best time to visit is. As one of South Carolina’s barrier islands, all Seabrook Island rentals in our private-gated community are afforded privacy, serenity, and solitude year-round. Possibly the most significant advantage of visiting Seabrook Island during the off-season is that it is even less occupied.

This is especially helpful as our members and guests continue to social distance throughout the season. You will often find that both Pelican and North Beach are wide open for a peaceful oceanside stroll or a day of lounging next to the waves. So grab a blanket, a cup of coffee, and an intriguing novel to spend the day beachside!

Redefine Winter Weather

Every year when winter comes around, we brace ourselves for the cold, and of course, every year, we remember that Seabrook’s mild temperatures and consistent sunshine provide us sweet solace from harsh winters. December temperatures on Seabrook Island typically fall in the low sixties, while the coldest time of year, January, often sees temperatures in the high fifties.

We typically experience chillier mornings and warm afternoons, so make sure to pack your layers! Seabrook is all about relaxing and appreciating the beauty around us, and there’s no better place to do it than right on the water. While it may be too brisk for a dip in the Atlantic, it’s more than comfortable enough to enjoy a walk along the beach with just a light jacket.

Savor a Taste of the Lowcountry

No matter what time of year you visit, Seabrook Island has amazing restaurants open, but in the off-season, you can enjoy any one of them without the summer beachgoers and longer wait times! This is true of all the entertainment venues at Seabrook as well. While you are here, make sure to try out one of the most popular seasonal cuisines – meaning oysters, of course.

Winter is the prime oyster season in South Carolina, so you can bet they’ll be serving them up at every restaurant in town. Lowcountry cuisine is best served fresh, and it doesn’t get fresher than oysters on the island.

Soak Up the Seabrook Sunshine & Surf

Our mild coastal temperatures during the winter season are ideal for many activities on the beach. The cool ocean breeze coming off of the ocean is wonderful for flying kits, and without the crowds, you’ll have plenty of space to roam. And with fewer sunbathers on the beach to navigate around, the off-season is also a great time to do some metal detecting and sea-shell collecting.

Enjoy a beach volleyball or football game without dealing with the excessive heat, or take a trip out on the water in a kayak or on a paddleboard. Not to mention, Pelican Beach is a perfect place for little ones and four-legged, furry friends who have been cooped up by the cold weather to run around outside.

Feel Extra Festive this Holiday Season

The charming Lowcountry hospitality is unparalleled, and it shines through some serious holiday spirit. Trust us, it comes naturally with the comfortable temperatures and agreeable island weather. Commence your holiday shopping with a bike ride over to Freshfields Village near the intersection of Johns, Seabrook, and Kiawah Island. Stroll through Freshfields Village to enjoy the cool winter air and some much needed retail therapy with various shopping and dining options.

Be sure to check out their event calendar, which is regularly updated with activities like antique Cars & Coffee, holiday movie nights, and Letters to Santa. As you tour the Holy City, you are sure to fall in love with the palm trees, unique architecture, and beautifully hung wreaths and garland on almost every door.
