More Volunteer Opportunities on Seabrook

College has been back in session for a couple of months now and the weather is finally beginning to cool down. With the kids out of the house and the temperature perfect for a variety of outdoor activities, we wanted to shed some light on a few more volunteering opportunities on and around Seabrook Island.

Volunteer with the Edmondston-Alston House

Are you a history buff? Volunteering as a tour guide for the Edmondston-Alston House could be an ideal position for you. In addition to getting to share your enthusiasm for local history with visitors to Charleston, guides also receive a reciprocal pass for themselves and one guest to visit other historical attractions in the Charleston area.

Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach

The mission of Our Lady of Mercy is to “provide educational, health and direct outreach services to people in need on James, Johns and Wadmalaw Island.” The organization is always looking for dentists, dental assistants, GED tutors, budgeting tutors, and receptionists to volunteer their time, and they have other volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

Reading Partners

Literacy is an essential skill; help a young student in a Title I elementary school strengthen their reading skills by volunteering as a tutor with Reading Partners. This organization provides the curriculum and you work with students as often as your schedule allows (ideally, one hour per week or more). These students read between six months and 2.5 years below their grade level.

Adopt-a-Highway

Adopt-a-Highway the perfect volunteer organization to join if your time is limited, but you still want to help keep your community beautiful and clean. Four times per year, volunteers with the Adopt-a-Highway program remove litter from the Betsy Kerrison Parkway. For more information and to get involved with the program, contact Mary Torello at mary.torello@yahoo.com
