Seabrook’s Most Iconic BBQ

Posted 11/05/2015

There is no shortage of good barbecue in South Carolina, and Seabrook has some of the best options in the state. Here is a compilation of where to go for great cue on the island and surrounding areas.

Miss Lulus Boutique and Smokeshed

This quaint little boutique hides a stellar smokehouse behind the shop. Smoked pork butts are regularly found on the grill alongside whole chickens and juicy ribs that have meat falling off the bones. Hamburgers, grilled chicken, and a host of delicious sandwiches round out their menu, with sides including baked-potato salad, smoked lima beans, coleslaw, and more. The 100% customer-oriented staff has you in mind and offers To Go platters as well as catering. Head out on Wednesday and Sunday evenings for live music on the deck! Beer and wine are available for purchase. The unique location can be found just outside of Seabrook the left by the Bohicket Marina. 4-piece Rib Platters with two sides and a dessert are just $12.95. Ask for Diane Wagner, Smoker and Kitchen Manager, for more information.

Miss Lulu’s is open 10 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Thursday – Sunday and 10 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday & Tuesday

Tattooed Moose on Johns Island (open now) and the Meathouse Butcher Shop (opening in early 2016)

Charlestonians are familiar with the Tattooed Moose, locally owned and run by the same group that owns the Voodoo Tiki Bar in West Ashley, with Moose locations both downtown and a newly opened restaurant on Johns Island. Chef Jason Houser, co-owner and meat curator of the popular local chain, wanted to bring a great Burgers-N-Beer joint to the locals on Johns Island. You may also be familiar with the Tattooed Moose as they have been featured on Food Networks “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” with Guy Fieri, where Mike showed Guy how he makes duck confit for his Famous Duck Club Sandwich.  Besides the famous duck club, other favorites include the melt in your mouth “Tattooed Moose Burger” and the “Thanksgiving Sammy” which is a little slice of thanksgiving with all the fixins (even gravy on the side for dipping)! This location on Johns Island is a bonus for Seabrook as well and is located just down the road on Maybank Highway. Currently, Chef Houser is curating meats for the upcoming Meathouse Butcher Shop, with charcuterie, smoked meats, and creamy pates being sold at the Johns Island Farmers Market. The company plans to open a free-standing Butcher Shop right next store to the Johns Island Tattooed Moose early in 2016. Get an early taste of Meathouse Butcher Shop’s menu at the Tattooed Moose with menu items like the Meathouse Snack Plate, Pate Melt, Lowcountry Cuban, or the Chocolate Bacon Pie.

Tattooed Moose is open 7 days a week 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 a.m

JBs Smokeshack

A Charleston favorite, located on John’s island, people travel from all over just to eat at JBs. Their pork, brisket, and ribs are cooked slowly over Hickory wood while their chicken is cooked slowly over applewood and seasoned with their own special rub. Our favorite is the fried chicken which has just the right amount of crispiness and is juicy on the inside. Their homemade BBQ sauce is a bonus, although the food is so good you almost don’t even need the BBQ sauce. The mac n cheese is night and light yet full of flavor. Other southern favorites at JB’s Smokeshack include fried okra, baked beans, and collard greens. Their $9 all-you-can-eat buffet is what most patrons opt-in for but don’t be alarmed, you can order your favorite meal a la carte if you choose.

JBs is open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 8:30 p.m
