Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island is a nonprofit located on the Island. This organization is entirely run by volunteers, and its mission is to provide weekend food and snacks to elementary school children in Charleston who live below the poverty line. So what can you do? One way is by delivering bags of food on Thursday afternoon. If you aren’t available on Thursdays, you can help by shopping for the food or getting it ready for delivery.

Sweetgrass Garden provides fresh food to locals who need it. Most of the donations have gone to the Lowcountry Food Bank, which then distributes it to Title 1 schools. However, they are expanding their outreach and need more volunteers. If spending a Saturday in the garden or tending to honeybees sounds like your idea of an enjoyable and rewarding time, this could be the opportunity for you.

Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic’s mission is to provide free medical care for low income, uninsured adults who live or work on Johns, James or Wadmalaw Island. They collaborate with Roper-St. Francis to give patients free lab imaging and physician consultations, but they are always looking for physicians, nurses, and office personnel to assist. Spanish interpreters are also in demand.

Pet Helpers aims to end euthanasia of adoptable cats and dogs. Just a few of the many opportunities that volunteers can participate in include: tour guide photography, fundraising, dog walking, and community outreach.
