Travel + Leisure magazine has named Charleston “The Best City in the U.S.” for the ninth straight year. And this New York transplant wholeheartedly agrees.

In October 2018, after nearly 4 years of traveling and living abroad, my husband and I moved our family to Charleston, South Carolina. We could have gone anywhere in the world, but like so many others, we were drawn in by this unique city.

It all started with what was supposed to be a 2-week visit. We booked ourselves an Airbnb on James Island with the intention of spending 2 weeks in South Carolina, followed by 2 weeks in Georgia. The result — we fell so head over heels for this city that we had no desire to go anywhere else and realized that 2 weeks just wasn’t enough time to explore all it has to offer and begin our new chapter as South Carolinians.

There’s Something About Charleston

Charleston is a city unlike any other, and we’ve been to many. While it is considered to be a small city, it’s unique in that it offers much of what the major cities do. My family and I found it to have many aspects that are of the same caliber as large cities like our native New York.

Before visiting Charleston, we spent the better part of 4 years living in, what some would call a “Two-and-a-half world country.” Our city roots and time abroad made us appreciate Charleston even more. After years as foreigners, we longed for the familiarity of our home country, as former New Yorkers we were craving some aspects of city life, but as world travelers, we came to realize that while we wanted some aspects of city life, what we most wanted was the ability choose between a quiet life with metropolitan benefits.

What We Love Most About Charleston

The beautiful architecture of its homes, history, gorgeous landscape, great year-round weather, food, people, pristine beaches, culture, great secondary school options for our two boys, a bustling economy, and proximity to an international airport made Charleston the best place for us. And when we’re missing our hometown, the ease of travel that the Charleston international airport offers makes New York just a short two-hour flight away!
