The Ocean Winds Grand Re-Opening and Tournament

The Lowcountry sun was shining, the centuries-old cypress trees standing tall, and lush blades of green grass swaying in the sea breeze, eagerly waiting to be played on once again. This past weekend, Seabrook Islanders christened the newly renovated Ocean Winds golf course during our highly anticipated member tournament.

The Ocean Winds Grand Re-Opening event kicked off a new season of golf on one of Seabrook Island’s signature golf courses, and we hope you are looking forward to it as much as we are! Read on to learn what our Seabrook Island Club members had to say about the new course renovations along with the list of our tournament winners.

Course Renovations History

Though ground was first broken this past spring, the Ocean Winds renovation project began approximately six years ago. The Seabrook Island Club’s team of golf professionals enlisted Rees Jones, Inc., a world-renowned golf course architecture firm, in collaboration with the Master Plan Committee, to bring new life to the course.

Rees’ firm was an obvious choice for the restoration project, with his extensive experience redesigning and renovating courses around the world. Commonly referred to as “The Open Doctor”, Rees and co-designer Bryce Swanson used their unique craftsmanship and respected methodologies to elevate our Ocean Winds course to premier status. Ocean Winds Grand Reopening

The Ocean Winds Golf Tournament first welcomed eager players with hot breakfast, a bloody mary bar, and beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Seabrook Island Club members were able to leisurely enjoy the cuisine and beverage stations placed throughout the course for a truly unforgettable experience.

The most noticeable changes to the course include extended and widened fairways, additional bunkers, reshaped traps, and a general refresh from the course’ original 1970s design. Bryce Swanson, lead architect on the project, emphasized how important playability was in the course’s redesign.

The game of golf continues to become more inclusive for women, younger players, and new enthusiasts. With so many new or repositioned tee boxes and opened fairways, Ocean Winds is now positioned as a course that gives a range of players opportunities for an exciting and challenging game.
